Ngā Kaupapa
Te Ao Matihiko is the kaitiaki organisation leading the strategic direction for it’s two kaupapa Māori in DigiTech, Te Hapori Matihiko and Te Matarau.
As kaitiaki of these kaupapa, Te Ao Matihiko supports tradition, innovation, and equity; existing to amplify Māori voices and experiences within the digital and tech industries at home in Aotearoa, and wherever our whanaunga have been carried by ngā hau e whā.
Operating with kōtahitanga front and centre, Te Ao Matihiko has brought our separate organisations and their respective mandates together, enabling our shared kaupapa to:
- foster equitable access
- embed digital excellence across the sector
- safeguard our culture in the digital realm
- advocate formal mechanisms of change and development
- platform skills, training, and employment opportunities
- provide pathways into the digital trade economy
- connect our Māori DigiTech community

Our vision is to integrate Te Ao Māori into the digital realm, maximise Māori participation, achieve digital excellence, and ensure the benefits of the digital age are equitably shared across all communities.
Te Whare Matihiko | Our Structure
We have two organisations which operate underneath the korowai of Te Ao Matihiko; Te Hapori Matihiko and Te Matarau which were both established in 2022.
After a year of delivery, it became clear that there were overlaps in kaupapa and duplication of work. Following the resignation of co-founder Lee Timutimu, Elle Archer and Katie Brown agreed to bring both organisations together to align the mahi, and streamline the work and align impact.
Te Ao Matihiko, meaning the digital realm, was created. We now have shared strategy and focus areas, and funding. Underpinning all of our work is guidance and direction of whānau, iwi and hapū.
Te Matarau, a charitable trust, is our system for change and policy organisation.
Since its inception in 2022, this kaupapa has delivered:
- 10 submissions
- e-Pa Wars
- 3 Ko Māui Hangarau events
- 14 Marae Matihiko and more
Te Hapori Matihiko is the ngākau of the kaupapa.
It brings together our people through online learning sessions, events, the Matihiko Awards and pathways opportunities.
It amplifies Māori voices and visions in Te Ao Matihiko, the digital realm.
What are we seeing?
Māori represent just 4.8% of the work-force in digital technologies.
Wāhine Māori represent only a third of that.
Māori are underrepresented in digitech & not visible
There was no community bringing Māori in Digitech together
No recognition of achievement in a kaupapa Māori way
Poor digital equity with Māori access to technology
No retention programme for Māori in Digitech.
No cultural support systems for Māori working in non-Māori tech organisations.
A need to safeguard Māori culture in digital
